Does Dolores dream of electric sheep? (No spoilers)
The two most common critiques of the "Westworld" pilot are a) the concept has been explored ad nauseam and b) the show drops to ontological depths too onerous to attract the GoT audience HBO wishes to retain after Martin ritually executes the population of Westeros.
To which I reply... are you freakin' kidding me?
Of course this concept has been explored incessantly but not ad nauseam. Ad aweseam! "Blade Runner." "The Terminator." "The Matrix." The original "Westworld" film with terrifying acid face Yul Brynner! Haven't seen it but "Ex Machina" is supposed to be awesome. We are obsessed with artificial intelligence because we are making incredible strides in its development.
Or so we think.
If what we understand about consciousness is true. And we understand almost nothing about consciousness.
The going theory is it's conceptually equivalent to computer software running on fleshy hardware. My guess is that's overly simplistic.
But that's beside the point. The whole thing is still wrapped in mystery and ignorance which means we can sci-fi the crap out of it and have a blast exploring the possibilities.
And as far as taking too deep a dive. What? We NEED that right now. The think pieces already nerding their way into the blogosphere will be ridiculous in the best way. Perception versus reality. Artificial intelligence. Consciousness. Morality. Ethics. Although we will have to wade through a good bit of nihilist millennial drivel.
Imagine the delicious irony of collectively considering humanity's destructive tendencies while shoveling Cheez-its down our gullets.
"Look at that, honey! We're awful!" (Munch munch munch) "Where's my phone!? I've gotta snapchat this crap! (Munch swallow burp) Siri, do my bidding! And get that orange cheese dust off yah face!"
Siri being essentially the first "host" (or as I like to call her "Dolores 1.0") money/depravity tells me that our culture is more likely pointed towards a Westworld future than not. Case in point: if we poured as many resources into curing cancer and disease as we do into apps that fuel our narcissism and insatiable desire for hedonistic pleasures, we'd all be immortal three years ago.
